Global deployment of CCS moves forward

Global deployment of CCS moves forward
Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne has hailed a major step forward in global deployment of carbon capture and storage technology (CCS), following a meeting of international officials.

The Carbon Capture, Use and Storage Action Group, which is chaired by Australia and the UK, met in the United Arab Emirates to create recommendations to speed up CCS development across the globe.

Calls were made for energy ministers to identify funding opportunities for large-scale CCS pilots in developing nations, enhance the legal and regulatory frameworks for the technology, and assess the potential of using CCS for industrial emissions, rather than just those from power generation.

"Deployment of the technology is tantalisingly close, but it won't happen at commercial scale without concerted efforts by governments around the world to address legal, financial and technical barriers," Mr Huhne said.

Further recommendations were made for sharing and development of best practice knowledge for CCS projects and the ratification of amendments to marine treaties to "promote the importance" of deployment.

Nine applications were recently put forward from UK CCS projects for funding under the European Union's NER 300 fund, with the majority of these coming from the Humber region and Scotland.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800492407-ADNFCR
