Glasgow firm shortlisted for electric vans

Glasgow firm shortlisted for electric vans
A Glasgow firm has been shortlisted alongside giants Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Citroen to provide low carbon electric vans for councils and organisations across the country, reports the Evening Times.

Allied Vehicles has been selected to provide prototypes that could become demonstration vans for the local authorities and organisations such as the Post Office.

Of the £100 million announced by the Department of Transport to advance electric vehicles, £20 million is to be used to develop vans.

According to the department, vans account for 15 per cent of road transport emissions in the UK and are the fastest rising within that sector.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' figures for 2006 revealed that, altogether, road transport accounted for 22 per cent of the UK's total emissions.

Transport Secretary David Hoon said: "In the public sector, there is considerable demand for vans, so we want to use our spending power to lead the way in developing lower carbon options that will appeal across the board."
