GE announces highest efficiency results for solar panels
GE has announced a major investment in its renewable energy business after achieving the highest publically-reported efficiency results for its solar panels.

The full-sized CdTe thin-film solar panels have a reported efficiency rating of nearly 13 percent and will be manufactured in a new US-based facility, which will be larger than any of its kind currently in operation in the country.

GE said it was putting itself in a position to capitalise from the growing demand of solar power, which is predicted to increase by 75 gigawatts over the next five years, mainly due to large-scale solar farms.

Once completed, the facility will have a capacity of 400 MW and will employ around 400 people. The location for the plant is due to be announced soon.

The company claim to already have orders for 100 MW of its thin-film solar products in place.

"Our plan to open a US solar manufacturing facility further demonstrates our confidence in this technology and is just the first phase in a global, multi-gigawatt roadmap," Victor Abate, vice president of GE's renewable energy business, said.

GE also recently announced it had developed a new taller wind turbine, designed specifically for densely forested areas and hillsides, which will make more sites suitable for power generation.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800494551-ADNFCR
