Gamesa announces major investment in Scottish offshore wind

Gamesa announces major investment in Scottish offshore wind
Wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa is looking to invest up to €50 million (£42.8 million) for the development of offshore technology in Scotland.

A Memorandum of Understanding is being developed between the Spanish company and Scottish Enterprise, Dundee City Council and Forth Ports, which would see further manufacturing and operations and maintenance projects around Dundee, depending on how the offshore industry surrounding the port evolves.

Gamesa is also looking to establish an Offshore Wind Technology Centre in Glasgow, which could potentially create 130 engineering-based jobs.

First minister Alex Salmond commented: "Scotland has the greatest natural resources for offshore renewables in Europe and this hugely significant announcement by Gamesa underlines the strength of our human resources in terms of expertise in innovation, design, manufacturing and engineering."

Scotland's strategy towards its offshore renewables resources was recently praised by a report from the European Commission, which also warned that for them to be used to their full potential they must be connected to a North Sea grid, the Courier reported.

Between now and 2014, Gamesa is looking to invest €150 million in offshore wind at locations across the UK. ADNFCR-1235-ID-800362333-ADNFCR
