Formula One team McLaren awarded Carbon Trust Standard

Formula One team McLaren awarded Carbon Trust Standard
McLaren has become the first Formula One team to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for its reduction in carbon emissions.

Martin Whitmarsh, team principle of McLaren, said the group has spent three years working towards the certification, adding it confirms the efforts those in the sport are making towards the development of "leaner, longer-lasting and more efficient energy solutions".

"In fact, we're probably the only sport in the world with the resources, know-how and commitment to drive forward pioneering new technologies that have the potential for huge mass-market crossover," he added.

Announcing the awarding of the standard, McLaren outlined a number of initiatives which led to the saving of 1,365 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Energy-efficient improvements were made to the team's premises, including the installation of low carbon lighting and controls, and the optimisation of the air conditioning system, meaning it only operates when people are in a specific area.

There was also a "rationalisation" of the compressed air supply throughout the McLaren factory.

More than 350 organisations have so far been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard including Tesco and HM Treasury.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800292507-ADNFCR
