FoE welcomes dedication to CO2 action
Friends of the Earth (FoE) has praised international political commitment to tackling climate change ahead of the Copenhagen conference next month.

US president Barack Obama and Chinese president Hu Jintao have announced that they would both be working together to achieve real progress at the UN summit next month.

A joint statement released earlier this week by the world leaders revealed that they were aiming for an accord with immediate operational effect.

Andy Atkins, FoE executive director, welcomed the news, which comes after weeks of lowered expectations.

"Rich country leaders must wake up to the threat of climate change and ensure that Copenhagen makes real progress in creating a low-carbon future for us all," he said.

"At the very least the world's richest nations must agree to substantially slash their emissions between 2012 and 2016 … and agree a comprehensive finance and technology package to allow developing countries to … deal with the impacts of climate change."

FoE is now calling on people to sign its Demand Climate Change petition to encourage world leaders to fight for a "strong and fair" deal at the Copenhagen conference.
