FoE calls for tougher climate talks

FoE calls for tougher climate talks
Friends of the Earth (FoE) is urging all EU countries to step up their efforts in the battle against climate change.

The call comes as European heads of government prepare to meet for the European Council in Brussels today (December 10th).

Andy Atkins, FoE executive director, explained that if ministers agreed to reduce carbon emissions by at least 30 per cent by 2020, it would increase momentum in Copenhagen.

He said: "The EU likes to think of itself as a leader on climate change - now is the time for real leadership, not more grand rhetoric and empty promises."

During the meeting, ministers will discuss climate change and CO2 emissions targets for the EU.

Mr Atkins added: "The EU must urgently commit to slashing its emissions … without offsetting and provide new money for developing countries to grow cleanly and adapt to the effects of climate change already causing suffering for millions of people."

Talks are set to continue until tomorrow (December 11th).
