Firms unaware of carbon commitment

Firms unaware of carbon commitment
More than two-thirds of businesses in the UK are unaware of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) legislation, an insurance and energy management firm has revealed.

According to RSA, 41 percent of firms do not know about the CRC, while three-quarters of companies are in the dark about when the legislation comes into effect.

This could see more than 5,000 businesses having to deal with rises of at least £55,000 in energy costs from next year.

Companies will have to offset carbon through buying allowances for every tonne of CO2 they emit.

Alex Matthias, energy management leader at RSA, urged firms to focus upon energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

He said: "CRC will be an important issue for many years to come and it is vital that organisations take advantage of the potential financial benefits by acting now rather than leaving it to the last minute and risking their company's reputation and bottom line."

Organisations qualify for CRC if their yearly half-hourly metered consumption of electricity is more than 6,000MWh.

And the clock is ticking…. The top 5000 organisations captured within the CRC EES will need to register within April to September of this year. The fines for not registering are indeed significant. There are some “do now” actions that would also be wise for these organizations. Noticeably the purchase of additional half hourly meters, which will be in high demand. Joining the carbon trust standard sooner rather than latter could also have a significant impact.
It would also appear that many organizations, even those that have registered, do not understand the details of what CRC ESS actually is. This is understandable as the scheme is indeed a complex one, a framework with many rules and action points to be undertaken, within controlled timescales. A good time to read the user’s guide maybe? Or get suitable training.
