Feed-in tariff, emissions commitments become law

Feed-in tariff, emissions commitments become law
The Energy Act and the Climate Change Act have entered the stature books, having received Royal Assent.

Instead of just a government promise, the commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 is now a legal requirement that will bind subsequent governments.

The Climate Change Act, hailed by Unicef UK as "the world's strongest piece of national climate change legislation", forces the UK to take account of the aviation and shipping industry when calculating national emissions.

Meanwhile the Energy Act, which provides for the introduction of feed-in tariffs for renewable electricity and incentives for renewable heat, has also been welcomed by campaigners.

While the laws set down the principles, they do not yet include the details of how the commitments will be carried out.

"Ministers must now rapidly develop a low-carbon economy - investing in green energy and cutting energy waste will also create exciting new business opportunities, many thousands of jobs and help lead Britain out of recession," said Friends of the Earth executive director Andy Atkins.

The Planning Bill received its assent at the same time. While the government has claimed that it will be used to fast-track renewable energy projects, environmental groups have expressed concern that it could be used to approve large projects such as power plants, roads or airports despite opposition.
