Fast-track green patent scheme 'a success'
A scheme designed to reduce the time it takes to patent green innovations has proved a success, according to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
The Green Channel service, offered by the Intellectual Property Office, is able to make a decision on a patent in just eight months, compared to the 32 months needed for a regular application.
Since being launched in May 2009, the service has fast-tracked, or is in the process of dealing with 329 applications, with 86 percent of these coming from British firms.
One-third of the patent applications received have been in the field of energy saving, according to the government, and just two per cent have been turned down because the environmental benefit could not be demonstrated.
Intellectual Property Minister Baroness Wilcox said: "Fast-tracking green patents provides businesses with practical help in developing green technology and bringing it to the consumer as quickly as possible."
The Confederation of British Industry recently claimed the transition to a low carbon economy offers many benefits for small and medium sized enterprises in the UK.
