European grant for Scottish renewable energy centre

European grant for Scottish renewable energy centre
A newly-opened research centre for renewable energy technologies in Scotland has been awarded a £1.6 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund.

The Scottish European Green Energy Centre (SEGEC), which is located in Aberdeen, will focus on furthering marine, offshore wind, super-grid and carbon capture and storage technologies.

It will also be involved in schemes to promote energy-efficiency and renewable heat production.

Opened this week by first minister Alex Salmond, the facility has been promised a further £1 million of funding over the next three years by the Scottish government.

It is intended that the SEGEC will enable Scotland to increase its presence in the European renewable energy sector and develop new partnerships with low-carbon businesses and organisations across the continent.

Mr Salmond said: "We must capitalise on Scotland's natural competitive advantages in clean, green energy to secure and grow the energy industry's presence in Scotland.

"The SEGEC aims to build on Aberdeen's long-established global reputation as an energy hub by positioning Scotland at the forefront of European innovation, research and development in clean, renewable energy."

In order to help train the next-generation of green energy engineers, the SEGEC will work with the Energy Technology Partnership, an alliance of Scottish universities engaged in environmental research.
