Europe to fund more hydrogen research

Europe to fund more hydrogen research
Research into hydrogen and fuel cell technology received a boost with the announcement of a public-private funding initiative by the European Commission.

Earlier this week the commission launched the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technology Initiative which will see the private sector match the £360 million governments will provide.

The initiative was launched to speed the time to market of hydrogen and fuel cell technology by five years.

According to the commission, the funding could lead to the mass-production of vehicles with the technology by 2015.

EU commissioner for science and research Janez Potocnik said: "By investing in such a results-oriented scientific project, we are putting our money where our mouth is: the development of new energy technologies is crucial if we are to meet EU objectives to address climate change and energy challenges."

Figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs reveal that in 2006 road transport accounted for 22 per cent of all the UK's emissions.
