ETS carbon trading to cost aviation one billion euros

ETS carbon trading to cost aviation one billion euros
With pressure mounting on airlines to cut their carbon emissions, a new report has suggested that the aviation sector will spend €1 billion (£607 million) on the EU's emissions trading scheme (ETS).

According to RDC Aviation and Point Carbon, carriers are likely to exceed the sector's emission cap by 77 million tonnes of CO2 in 2011, an amount that would cost €1.1 billion to cover through carbon offsetting, businessgreen.com reports.

Basing their data on emissions figures collected between 2004 and 2006, the organisations predicted that this figure could rise further as demand for EU emission allowances increases across all sectors of the economy.

Andreas Aryanitakis, senior analyst at Point Carbon, told businessgreen.com: "Some of the larger carriers are fairly well positioned and have been investing in more efficient fleets and preparing for compliance with the scheme.

"But there is still a lot of ignorance among smaller airlines about the implications of this and they have been very passive about preparing."

The website explained that once airlines are entered into the ETS, they will be given carbon allowances based on the weight and distance of their flights.
