E.On to build CCS pilot

E.On to build CCS pilot
German utility firm E.On is to set up a carbon capture and storage (CCS) pilot that could serve as a basis for future demonstration plants.

Working together with Siemens, the power company is to install a post-combustion carbon capture process which will come online in the summer at its Staudinger coal-fired power plant.

The process uses chemical cleaning agents to extract carbon dioxide from flue gas, which once cleaned is released through the plant's stack.

As well as testing the efficiency of the carbon capture system, the pilot will also assess the long-term chemical stability of the cleaning agents and energy efficiency of the process.

Michael Suess, CEO of the fossil power generation division of Siemens Energy, said: "The results achieved and the operating performance of the pilot plant will serve as the basis for large-scale demonstration plants, which are scheduled to start operation in the middle of the next decade."

E.On, along with ScottishPower and Peel Power, has applied to build a CCS demonstration plant at a planned new power station at Kingsnorth in Kent.

Last year Environment Agency chairman Lord Chris Smith said that the approval of any plans for new power plants should be conditional on the design accounting for future installation of CCS equipment.

He said: "Any new coal power station to be built should have a consent that requires that it helps demonstrate the technology.

"Such a consent should be strictly time-limited and only renewed if carbon capture and storage is fully deployed."

Meanwhile, the National Grid is planning to set up a network to pipe captured carbon to storage facilities under the North Sea.
