Energy production and carbon emissions down

Energy production and carbon emissions down
Total energy production and carbon dioxide emissions were lower in 2008 than in the previous year, according to the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

Energy generation, measured in tonnes of oil equivalent, was down 4.8 percent, while carbon dioxide equivalent emissions fell by 2 percent, according to DECC figures.

In total, energy equivalent to 177.0 million tonnes of oil was produced.

The figures also revealed that total primary energy consumption decreased by 11 percent while consumption of coal and other solid fuel dropped by 8.4 percent in 2008.

Meanwhile, estimated emissions of the six greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto protocol fell from 636.6 million tonnes in 2007 to 623.8 million tonnes in 2008.

Energy and climate change minister, Joan Ruddock said: "Once again emissions in the UK are down. It's clear that our policies will achieve more than what's required under Kyoto, but we have much more to do at home to maintain our leadership globally."
