Energy industry preparing for climate change

Energy industry preparing for climate change
Met Office helps energy industry prepare for climate change impacts.
Energy industry readiness to meet the increasing energy demand and adapt to the effects of climate change has improved, according to a recent report.

A study by the Met Office's Hadley Centre and the energy industry has revealed that the industry is taking steps to anticipate the effects of climate change and prepare for it, as well as increase capacity to meet growing demand.

Energy and Climate Change Minister Mike O'Brien welcomed the report: "Cutting emissions from energy plants is a crucial part of how we are tackling climate change, but our energy networks themselves must also be resilient to the changing world in which they operate.

"Energy infrastructure is costly and can have a lifespan of 40 or more years, so it's a smart move for the energy industry to seek the expert advice of the Met Office Hadley Centre. This will help anticipate the potential impacts of climate change and allow the industry to future-proof what it builds in the coming years."

Among the findings of the research was the need to take into account the fact that soil conditions will change, posing a potential risk for transmission cables.

It also notes that the risks to transformers will change as night time temperature of cities rises.

As well as meeting rising demand, energy companies will be working to meet government targets to generate 15 per cent of electricity from renewable resources by 2020, as well as reduce greenhouse gases in accordance with the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target.
