Electric vehicle take-up 'still uncertain'

Electric vehicle take-up 'still uncertain'
Nobody yet knows what the take-up of electric vehicles by the UK public will be like, one expert has claimed.

Dr Ben Lane, director of WhatGreenCar.com, said that government grants and the availability of new models should lead to an increase in the uptake of electric vehicles, but whether this will happen is not yet known.

"Everybody is watching to see if the latest models can actually switch people to electric vehicles in significant numbers," he added.

Transport secretary Phillip Hammond recently awarded £24 million for the development of low carbon vehicles and related technology in the UK.

The development of electric engines for Nissan, Lotus and Jaguar Land Rover cars, lightweight materials to reduce the weight of vehicles and thermal energy technologies to boost performance are among the projects receiving funding.

Dr Lane added that the government could do more in terms of incentives to consumers, but praised the plug-in car grant.

"For the first time, the government is seriously tackling the purchase barriers and the grant is likely to make a significant difference," he said. ADNFCR-1235-ID-800073947-ADNFCR

If the press releases by those in industry are anything to go by, we will be struggling to keep the power on for existing uses. So why the rush to promote electric cars? If there is significant penetration into the market by electric vehicles where will the power come from? Will it help or hinder the daily generating cycle? Is the country saving power by taking on all the renewable / energy savign technologies - what is this likely to do for future demand, etc.

So I think there need to be more answers before we can safely take on board electric car development.
