EIB funding gets Belgian windfarm project off the ground

EIB funding gets Belgian windfarm project off the ground
Construction is set to begin on Belgium's largest renewable energy project following the capture of 300 million euros (£254 million) of funding.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) grant will be used to commence with phase one of the 330MW Belwind Offshore Energy windfarm development, which is to be established 30 miles off the coast of Belgium.

Due for completion by 2011, the low-carbon power generation project in Bligh Bank will help the government to meet its target of six percent of electricity from renewable energy by 2010, it is hoped.

Commenting on the EIB funding, Frank Coenen, project director at Belwind, said: "This is a real milestone - both for the development of renewable energy assets in Belgium but also for the financing of such projects.

"The strong backing from partners has allowed us to get to the construction stage in just three and a half years - a record-breaking short amount of time."

Belwind's Bligh Bank windfarm will make use of Vestas V90 wind turbines, each capable of providing 3MW of capacity.
