EfW scheme approved in English county of Lincolnshire

EfW scheme approved in English county of Lincolnshire
Lincolnshire is hoping to improve its waste and recycling management while also cutting carbon dioxide emissions with a new energy-from-waste (EfW) plant.

The county council's Planning and Regulation Committee granted permission to the power generation scheme, which will be established in North Hykeham.

The council is currently contemplating three bidders for the project, namely Shanks Groupe, Urbaser SA and Waste Recycling Group.

Each will submit a detailed proposal later this year, with the project expected to be up-and-running by 2013.

Councillor Lewis Strange, chairman of the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership, explained that the new facility will create clean, efficient electricity and heat from the county's rubbish.

"Lincolnshire is already among the country's best recyclers; today's landmark decision means we can now work our way towards this fantastic solution for treating non-recyclable waste too," he added.

"I want to pay tribute to the thorough work of the waste team so far and thank the public for their valuable input too."

Lincolnshire estimates that the EfW scheme will boost recycling and composting to 55 percent in the county, while also generating green electricity.
