Eco-campaigners welcome climate change department

Eco-campaigners welcome climate change department
Environmental campaigners have welcomed the creation of a new department for climate change and environment.

In today's cabinet reshuffle, prime minister Gordon Brown announced the creation of the new department, which will have close political ally Ed Miliband as its first secretary of state.

WWF-UK campaigns director David Norman said: "It shows a clear recognition that the UK's chances of hitting its climate targets are inextricably linked to its energy policies.

"It is therefore vital that Ed Miliband's first action as head of this department is to overrule any plans to build new unabated coal-fired power stations, and instead ensure that the UK wholeheartedly delivers on its energy efficiency and renewable energy targets."

The move was also welcomed by the Corporate Leaders on Climate Change group, a Prince of Wales organisation.

Director of the group Craig Bennet told Business Green that having a dedicated climate change department would help the issue move up the agenda, though he warned that it is a subject that must be dealt with by all departments.
