Divorce 'is bad for the environment'

Divorce 'is bad for the environment'
New research has shown that divorce is bad for the environment as it increases energy use and emissions.

A team from Michigan State University in the US analysed the environmental impact of marital breakdown and concluded that it significantly added to emissions.

The findings were published in the new edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.

In particular, the researchers found that a global trend of soaring divorce rates has created more households with fewer people, and significantly increased consumption of energy and water.

For example, the report found that in the US alone in 2005 divorced households used 73 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and 627 billion gallons of water that could have been saved had household size remained the same as that of married households.

"People have been talking about how to protect the environment and combat climate change, but divorce is an overlooked factor that needs to be considered," commented researcher Jianguo Liu.

"We're showing divorce has significant competition for that water and space. On the other hand, more divorce demands more energy. This creates a challenging dilemma and requires more creative solutions."ADNFCR-1235-ID-18384225-ADNFCR
