Dell supports low carbon economy
Dell has become the first computer company to join the Climate Group, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promote the benefits of a low-carbon economy, it has emerged.
The announcement, made during a Houston, Texas-based conference entitled Challenges and Opportunities in a Carbon-Constrained World, has pledged to make its company facilities, business air travel and manufacturing operations carbon-neutral by the end of the year.
According to Chris Walker, the Climate Group's North American director, the organisation has confidence that Dell will lead the IT industry's efforts to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.
"Dell's extensive product reach into homes and offices creates the potential to make an even greater contribution to creating a low carbon economy," he said.
The computer firm also supports Aids awareness charity (Product) RED in a joint collaboration with software firm Microsoft.
A portion of the proceeds from sales of (Product) RED branded PCs - which come complete with a special edition of Windows Vista software - are donated to the charity and have been available in around 30 countries since the end of January.
