Councils' waste management shows progress

Councils' waste management shows progress
Waste management by councils has seen "significant progress" over the six years the Audit Commission has been carrying out Comprehensive Performance Assessments (CPA), claims its final report.

The Final Score report notes that household and kerbside recycling, landfill diversion and even waste reduction have improved during the course of the assessments.

"While on average councils only succeeded in reducing the overall amount of waste collected per household by three per cent (from 493kg to 479kg) between 2001/02 and 2007/08, significant progress was made in the management of that waste," claims the report.

However, though the reduction in waste collection was not impressive, the report also noted that during the period, the amount of waste sent to landfill dropped from 77 per cent to 54 per cent.

It also highlighted that household recycling increased from eight per cent to 21 per cent and that over a third of councils offered kerbside recycling of two recyclables to all residents.

The report claims that councils have improved across the board during the course of the CPA.

Having started with 22 councils achieving four star status, as the scheme closes 63 councils are performing at that level.

The CPA is to be replaced by the Comprehensive Area Assessment which will monitor how councils and partnerships are providing services.
