Consumers set to buy more green goods
The green retail market in Europe is set to expand in the next five years as prices of such items drop, according to research by Kelkoo.co.uk.

Currently, eco-conscious shoppers are splashing out 46 per cent more for their green non-food items and 25 per cent more for green foods. However, retail prices for environmentally-friendly goods are expected to drop by 13 per cent over the next two years.

As a result, it is anticipated that the green retail market will be worth €114 billion by 2015 compared to €56 billion in 2009.

"We can expect availability, green price premiums and consumer demand to change over the next few years, but probably the single most important factor preventing a greater uptake of green merchandise in stores and the internet is price," said Kelkoo UK managing director Bruce Fair.

"Sales of green products will not become commonplace until suppliers give consumers better price incentives instore and online to follow their consciences."

According to the 2009 Greendex survey, which tracks how green consumers in various nations are, shoppers in India, Brazil and China scored most highly.
