Conservatives accused of holding back UK wind power

Conservatives accused of holding back UK wind power
Local authorities in the UK run by the Conservatives are blocking three times as many windfarms as they approve, it has been warned.

According to Greenpeace, Tory councillors dismissed a large number of renewable energy developments between December 2005 and November 2008, the Guardian reports.

During the same period, it found that Labour-controlled councils only just approved slightly more windfarms than they turned down.

The newspaper explained that the data, which Greenpeace has shared with the Department of Energy and Climate Change, is important in the context of what is going on with Vestas.

The UK's only wind turbine manufacturer has threatened to close its Isle of Wight manufacturing facility because of a lack of domestic demand.

John Sauven, executive director of Greenpeace, was quoted by the publication as saying: "One of the reasons Britain's green industrial revolution is yet to take off is the lack of domestic demand for wind turbines and a key reason for that has been the attitude of many Conservative councils."

He urged David Cameron to pledge the Conservative party's support to targets being set on renewable energy.

I don't wish to defend the Tories in this, but this news is hardly surprising considering that:

1. The best sites for wind power are generally in the countryside where the Tories are strongest, and
2. A typical anti-wind farm activist will be a middle-aged, middle class person who obsesses over the value of their home. This kind of person is likely to vote conservative and is not somebody that a Tory councillor will want to upset.

Since they are likely to form the next government, I hope Cameron will show some backbone on this issue and risk upsetting his core constituency for the sake of us all.
