Companies will be obliged to reveal emissions
Companies will be obliged to publicly reveal their greenhouse gas emissions by 2012, under an amendment to the Climate Change Bill.
The amendment, suggested by the government, would force businesses to reduce their carbon footprint, according to climate change minister Joan Ruddock.
She told the Daily Telegraph: "This will allow companies to demonstrate their green credentials and provide transparency for investors and consumers. It aims to stimulate businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and work towards a productive low carbon future."
The move was welcomed by charity Christian Aid, with head of campaigns Paul Brannen pointing out that under the current system, reporting of emissions is "voluntary, unaudited and incompatible with other company's disclosures".
Last week, secretary of state for energy and climate change Ed Miliband announced that the government would set an 80 per cent target for carbon emissions reductions by 2050.
Both the government and financial experts such as Deutsche Asset Management have called for investment in green technologies and infrastructure to help the country weather the financial downturn and make the transition to a low carbon economy.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/3270430/Climate-ch...
