CHP technology 'can offer carbon savings'

CHP technology 'can offer carbon savings'
Micro-combined heat and power (CHP) technology has the potential to provide reductions in carbon emissions, if used in the right situations, according to new research.

The field trial of Micro-CHP systems by the Carbon Trust revealed that the technology can provide both carbon and cost savings for small commercial operations and in certain types of house.

When used in certain small businesses, Micro-CHP cut overall carbon emissions by between 15 and 20 per cent, while larger houses using the technology were able to reduce their carbon impact by between five and ten per cent.

Mark Williamson, director of innovations at the Trust, said: "Our analysis of more than 30,000 days worth of data shows that Micro-CHP systems can deliver significant CO2 savings for small businesses and certain types of houses."

"However, if the market for this exciting technology is to develop, it needs a policy framework which provides appropriate incentives to target applications which offer worthwhile carbon savings," he added.

The study also revealed that current Micro-CHP systems offered only limited benefits to both small and new houses, with the greatest potential for savings made in buildings where heating was required for long and consistent periods.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18373861-ADNFCR
