Carbon reduction efforts 'need to take distribution into account'

Carbon reduction efforts 'need to take distribution into account'
Firms looking to reduce their carbon emissions need to introduce a system of "duty of care" to ensure their products are as carbon-friendly as possible, the Telegraph has reported.

Carbon emissions can be cut in a number of ways and should be addressed across the supply chain, said Euan Murray, general manager of carbon footprinting at the Carbon Trust.

Citing examples such as chocolate firm Cadbury-Schweppes, which is working to cut the carbon emissions produced by dairy cows, or Walkers Crisps, which is attempting to cut emissions released by tractors used to harvest potato crops, he stated firms may wish to "take proper stewardship of the process by which their products come to market" if they wish to be seen as eco-friendly.

"The parallel that I draw is this - what would happen if you bought a shirt and then found out that the buttons on it were made by a 10-year-old in a sweatshop somewhere?"

He added that the best approach is for firms to collaborate with their suppliers and work out ways in which carbon emissions can be managed and create incentives for a low carbon approach to be adopted.

Cadbury-Schweppes is one of a number of firms participating in the Carbon Disclosure Project and currently works in partnership with the Carbon Trust to develop ways for a product's carbon footprint to be tracked through the supply chain.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18501795-ADNFCR
