Carbon counter switched on in New York

Carbon counter switched on in New York
A 70ft-tall digital billboard has been installed in the heart of New York City that aims to keep a running count of global greenhouse gas levels.

Situated at 33rd Street and 7th Avenue, the location of the historic Madison Square Garden stadium, the real-time carbon counter was put up by Deutsche Bank's Asset Management (DeAM) team as part of its 'Know the Number' campaign.

The display currently reads 3.64 trillion metric tonnes and is based on calculations by scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that include 24 greenhouse gases (GHGs) falling under the Kyoto and Montreal protocols.

Switching on the counter yesterday (June 18th), DeAM global head Kevin Parker warned that carbon and other GHGs are rapidly accumulating in the atmosphere.

He said: "It will be a huge task to bring global emissions under control and my hope is that putting this data in the public view will spur both governments and markets to move us more quickly to a low-carbon economy.

"The science shows that unless this trend is addressed now there is a growing likelihood of increased warming and more severe disruptions for economies and societies."

The carbon counter consists of 40,960 light emitting diodes and can be tracked around-the-clock online.
