Capgemini: Sustainability will be 'critical' to businesses
Sustainability, energy efficiency and resiliency lie at the core of Capgemini's Merlin Tier 3 data centre, the company has claimed.
Paul Anderson, programme director for infrastructure outsourcing at Capgemini, said that sustainability will be "critical" to all businesses in the future and the data centre was created with internally set targets in mind.
Capgemini claims that the centre has the best Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of all comparable facilities worldwide.
Merlin has a PUE output of 1.08, which is less than half the industry standard of 2.5 PUE, according to Computing.co.uk. The news provider also reported that the Environment Agency is set to use two modules of the data centre, which is being described as the greenest in the world.
Mr Anderson explained that an existing building was used to reduce the environmental impact of initial construction of the facility.
"We looked at where the manufacturers had sourced parts from - what countries they sourced from, whether they were locally sourced and whether they were from environments which had attempted to reduce waste and pollution," he added.
