Canal water cools corporate computers

Canal water cools corporate computers
Water from the Grand Union Canal will help cut the carbon emissions from one pharmaceutical firm's west London headquarters.

Up to 920 tonnes of carbon emissions could be saved at GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) canalside headquarters following the installation of a new cooling system.

The heat exchange system, launched by canal and river guardian British Waterways and GSK earlier this week, takes in water, which via heat exchangers cools the company's data centre.

Replacing the existing system is expected to save GSK £100,000 a year in energy costs and it will recoup its costs in five years.

Tony Hales, British Waterways' chairman, said: "A legacy of their industrial past, our waterways pass alongside thousands of waterside organisations seeking greener ways of doing business."

Some 1,000 businesses along the canal could use similar systems, according to British Waterways, saving a total of £100 million on energy bills and cutting one million tonnes of carbon emissions.

Earlier this month, the IT industry was urged to combat climate change by signing up to the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres.

According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, data centres account for three per cent of UK electricity consumption, with the figure set to double by 2020.

Out of curiosity, what happens to the temperature of the water? What if the British Waterways promotes this "system" all along the canal? Are the BTUs enough to raise the temp of the water and affect wildlife or the habitat in general?
