Call for govt to support offshore wind supply chain

Call for govt to support offshore wind supply chain
The government should provide the same support for the offshore wind supply chain as it did for the oil and gas industry, it has been claimed.

President of the Royal Academy of Engineering Lord Browne of Madingley, said "generous tax incentives, training programmes, strategic infrastructure and supportive regulation" were provided by the government during early development of the oil and gas sector.

"The result today is a world leading industry, creating jobs in manufacturing and engineering across the UK," he added.

Lord Browne argued that the same support should be offered for the offshore wind supply chain if the UK hopes to reap the same economic benefits.

According to the Carbon Trust, the UK is poised to capture ten percent of the global offshore wind market.

The comments come as a new report, Making Green Growth Real: UK Offshore Wind Supply Chain, is published by the Royal Academy of Engineering and Orbis Energy.

It calls for the number of skilled workers in the energy industry to be increased, a clear health and safety strategy for offshore wind to be put in place and the development of a UK-wide strategy for the supply chain. ADNFCR-1235-ID-800585975-ADNFCR
