Businesses urged to consider biomass heating
Businesses have been advised to look into biomass heating to cut their costs and reduce carbon emissions.

The Carbon Trust, set up to accelerate the transition to the low carbon economy, has published a practical guide on using small scale waste-to-energy and biomass heating systems.

It claims that biomass provides savings of up to four pence per kilowatt hour compared to heating oil, meaning a system that generates 1,600 megawatt hours could save a building up to £50,000.

"We've become so reliant on oil, gas and electricity that many businesses just aren't aware of the cost and carbon benefits of turning to biomass for their heating supply," said Mark Williamson, director of innovations at the trust.

He added: "Heating presently accounts for almost half (49 per cent) of the UK's carbon emissions. Biomass typically offers carbon reductions of around 90 per cent relative to fossil fuel heating systems. In its Renewable Energy Strategy consultation, the government proposed that renewable sources may need to provide 14 per cent of the UK's heating requirements (up from its current level of less than one per cent) to meet the 2020 renewable energy targets."

Mr Williamson also pointed out the volatility of fossil fuel prices, a problem highlighted by the ongoing row between Russia and Ukraine over the transit of gas to Europe.
