Businesses call on governments to reduce emissions

Businesses call on governments to reduce emissions
Governments around the world must take decisive steps to reduce carbon emissions using policies and practical incentives, a new report has claimed.

According to a survey of 58 global businesses by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and AEA Technology, 97 percent of senior managers believe government intervention will lead the way to a low-carbon economy.

Questioning company leaders, the researchers also learned that there is strong commercial demand for the creation of low-carbon markets as part of a globally recognised framework.

Paul Dickinson, chief executive of the CDP, which runs a database on corporate emissions, said: "Business operations don't stop at national boundaries and internationally.

"Business is calling for these policies now, irrespective of the current economic challenges we are facing."

Among the recommendations put forward by commercial organisations were tax incentives and grants for businesses deploying low-carbon technologies.

Interestingly, despite research to the contrary published recently by npower, the CDP/AEA study indicated that most businesses reject the idea that climate change is being sidelined as a result of the current economic pressure.

Last month, npower claimed that two-thirds of businesses see little practical advantage in reducing their carbon footprints and are subsequently focusing on cost-cutting initiatives instead.

It's not often you see business inviting more interference from government! Is this because companies that are doing the right thing aren't seeing the financial reward they expect and want to ensure the competition also has to invest in environmental stewardship and GHG reduction strategies? Either way, if it brings us close to a low-carbon economy, it's a great thing.
