BT to cut carbon footprint by 80%
British Telecoms (BT) has announced that it is to cut its carbon footprint by 80 per cent.
The low carbon initiative aims to reduce the company's carbon emissions by 2020 worldwide, based on the 1996-97 levels.
Energy efficient measures that are to be adopted by the telecoms major include generating its own electricity through investing in wind turbines; it states that 25 per cent of its power will be generated in this way by 2016.
BT chair Sir Michael Drake commented: "When we announced the wind turbine product a few months ago at worst we thought it was cost-neutral, so why not do it, but actually the way costs of fuel are going its going to be cost beneficial."
In addition, internal energy efficiency measures will be undertaken by the corporation, as well as a new business model that aims to integrate financial performance with environmental efforts.
As part of its sustainability programme, BT has also claimed that it will recycle more than 50 per cent of its waste by 2009.
