Battery maker predicts large market for its products
Even a limited uptake of hybrid and electrical cars could create a significant market for lithium-ion batteries, according to one of the largest battery makers in the world.
GS Yuasa, which has created two joint ventures to manufacture lithium-ion battery cells, believes that no one company could create all the batteries needed to satisfy demand.
The company's president Makato Yoda told the Financial Times that even if just ten per cent of cars were switched for hybrid or electrical vehicles it would create an "unbelievably large market" for lithium-ion batteries.
He added that having formed two joint ventures one with Honda and another with Mitsubishi the company was looking to sell its batteries through those two rather than set up new projects.
Honda's gas-electric hybrid offering, Insight, has been selling faster in Japan than the target the company had previously set itself.
The Insight will be on sale in Europe, when it can be added to green fleets in March.http://tinyurl.com/dklsfh
