Aviation ''needs to do more'' than carbon offsetting

Carbon offsetting schemes launched by airlines are a step in the right direction but there are many other ways for both companies and consumers to help reduce their impact on climate change, according to a carbon expert.

The aviation market is making efforts to reduce its pollution levels as both airlines and customers become more aware of air industry''s impact on the environment, explained Simon Stokes, business development manager at Carbon Footprint.

However, he called on both the airlines and people who use them to be willing to take other measures to reduce their carbon footprint, highlighting the relatively small impact of carbon offsetting.

Commenting on the aviation industry''s carbon offsetting schemes, Mr Stokes said: "Most of the solutions that are in place are honourable and they are doing the right things."

"Consumers also need to remember that offsetting is only a very small part of the solution to climate change," he added.

According to the International Air Transport Association, aviation is responsible for 12 per cent of carbon emissions from all transport sources, equal to three per cent of the total man-made contribution to climate change.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18356706-ADNFCR
