Alstom to build new UK power station

Alstom to build new UK power station
French energy giant Alstom Power has won a one billion euro contract to construct the largest combined-cycle power plant in the UK.

The firm has agreed to design and build the gas-fired facility for energy company RWE npower in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on the site of a previous oil-fired power station.

It is estimated that the new power plant will have an approximate output of 2,000 MW, enough to supply energy to 3 million homes.

Philippe Joubert, president of the company's power activities, said: "This new project clearly demonstrates that Alstom's engineering expertise is crucial to the power industry in the UK and around the world."

The Pembrokeshire facility will make up part of RWE npower's plan to reduce its long-term carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and is intended to be one of Britain's most fuel-efficient plants.

By 2015, the provider aims to have reduced its CO2 emissions per unit of power generated by 33 percent compared to 2000 levels, a 50 percent reduction against 1990 emissions rates.

The energy industry is a hot topic for all UK households. Which energy generation strategy is right for the UK is just one important topic that you might want to have your say on, ask a question about or discuss.

A focus in recent months has been the sometimes controversial issues around the mix of power generation options needed by the UK. npower is hosting a nationwide online debate, The Brighter Energy Debate, where the UK’s options for power generation are one important theme of many.

The Brighter Energy Debate aims to explain the complexities of the industry and address the issues that affect us all - from energy bills to energy efficiency, renewables and beyond.

As well as directly answering your questions, the site features video interviews where the news reporter Peter Snow puts the big questions to npower’s CEO, Kevin Miles.
