The Carbon Trust

Carbon Survey helped hotel reduce impact

When the Lowry Hotel in Manchester wanted to reduce its environmental impact without compromising the five-star experience, a Carbon Trust Carbon Survey helped it find the right solutions.

When the hotel made energy awareness part of its working practices, it committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 10% year on year. The Carbon Trust suggested putting in place a building management system to monitor energy use and reduce it where possible, such as by switching off lights and air conditioning in areas which are not being used.

The hotel also swapped all its light bulbs for energy efficient alternatives, and made alterations to the boilers and the air conditioning system to make them more efficient.

Staff behaviour
Staff are also encouraged to make a difference through their own behaviour. There has been a significant increase in the number of employees cycling to work, since the installation of bike parking points, and recycling points have been introduced in every office.

A greener reputation
By following our recommendations, the Lowry Hotel reduced its carbon dioxide output by 354 tonnes a year, saving £37,498 at today's prices. It has also increased its appeal to businesses by improving its reputation as a sustainable conference venue.
