Wind power forms the largest segment in the renewable energy market in India. The industry has undergone a structural shift from manufacturer to 'independent power producer' model in the country and till date is dominated by private players.
The industry growth rate is very high, at reportedly above 30% since 2004 and is estimated to be worth around $2.5bn. Though the on-shore potential is estimated to be around 48,500 MW, the installed capacity up to the end of March 2010 is only 11,807 MW. There is no dearth of incentives at central and state levels, accelerated depreciation, tax exemptions, concessional equipments to the recently introduced generation-based ones.
But realization of potential is a long way off and there are also differences between installed and utilized capacities. The Wind 2010 conference and exhibition will provide a unique forum to discuss the required growth and opportunities available in the wind energy sector in India.
