Environmental Change Institute launches first spin-out company

The Environmental Change Institute has launched its first spin-out company, Pilio Limited, which will market an innovative, cost-effective software which can cut the energy bills of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) by up to 40%.

sMeasure was developed and piloted by researchers Dr Russell Layberry and Catherine Bottrill of the Lower Carbon Futures Team as part of a UKERC-funded project. It has been available online for three years, and in the last year has been used by over 400 businesses to monitor their energy use.

The technology allows SMEs to monitor and analyze their energy use. It works by combining gas and electricity meter readings with weather data, in order to accurately assess a building’s energy efficiency, and is simple and cost-effective to use; it only takes five minutes a week to input the energy readings, and no extra meters or devices are required.

Businesses which have already made use of sMeasure include the Royal Albert Hall, Greater London Authority and Severn Eye Energy Agency. sMeasure is also expanding into the US market as part of the Innovator Pilot Project with Sierra Business Council, and the project is supported by Pacific Gas and Electric, the largest utility in the US. Over the next year, the company aims to increase the number of UK and US SMEs it works with four-fold.

Dr Russell Layberry comments: "This is an exciting time to be launching energy management software onto the market, which is presently poorly served. Energy bills and squeezed margins push energy efficiency up the agenda. We feel this can help businesses both in the UK and worldwide to meet their commitments to sustainability and corporate responsibility."
Professor Jim Skea, Research Director at the UK Energy Research Centre, adds: “It’s great to see a UKERC project leading to the development of a tool that will make a difference in the real world, cutting costs for companies and helping to deliver Britain’s energy and climate policy goals. I look forward to hearing more about the roll-out of this innovative product.”
