Small scale wind system

Wind turbines consist of a rotor and generator forming the turbine head, mounted on a tower or mast, and electrically connected to the mains via an inverter.

We install wind turbines from around 3kW/6m height/3m rotor diameter to 200kW/30m height/27m rotor diameter. Wind turbines need to be mounted in an exposed location, ideally with no obstructions, particularly in the direction of the prevailing wind.

Prior to the installation of a wind turbine, the site's wind speed needs to be assessed. Ideally, wind speed monitoring would be carried out for at least a year. Because this is both time consuming and expensive, often a database containing simulated wind speeds is used for assessment. Typically, sites need to have an average wind speed of at least 5m/s at the hub height to make a wind turbine viable. Higher wind speeds result in significantly higher energy output, thus making a wind turbine installation more economic.

Wind turbines require regular servicing, to ensure that they are safe and operating at optimum performance. A maintenance check every year or two is recommended.
