PC Power Down

PC Power Down school case study

West Hatch High School in Essex has long been a Microsoft beta test site for various technology innovations and so, when PC Power Down was looking for a school to trial its products, Microsoft suggested West Hatch. Even though the school is very environmentally conscious add has policies to avoid waste, the trial showed that implementing PC Power Down generated savings of £14,000 a year for a product that would have cost £1,000.

The school currently educates 1300 students from the local catchment area and nearly 200 sixth form pupils from North east London and west Essex. Built in 1957 (as West Hatch Technical High School) on Chigwell High Road the grounds have been renovated on numerous occasions developing the many acre site into 7 main teaching buildings. The school is currently considering applying for Academy status.

Along with much of the public sector, there is a focus on both reducing costs and carbon emissions. The concept of PC Power Down appealed to West Hatch High School so they agreed to try it across approximately 600 PCs spread across the seven main buildings. They have policies in place for students and staff to switch off computers when not needed but the policy is not necessarily 100% effective.

The trial concluded at the turn of the year and their ICT manager Alan Richards was asked to present his findings along with other cost saving initiatives on the Microsoft stand at the 2011 BETT Fair in Olympia this January.

Alan was able to demonstrate that by using PC Power Down, West Hatch High School had achieved an annualised saving of £14,000 across its 600 computers; that is despite having had manual policies in place prior to the trial. This represents an incremental saving on average of £23 per computer.
