British Heat PumpsTop in Heat Pump Trial

Kensa Engineering, based in Truro, Cornwall, the UK’s only manufacturer of a full range of ground source heat pumps has welcomed the Energy Saving Trust’s report, ‘Getting warmer; a field trial of heat pumps’, following their recent monitoring project.

According to Managing Director Simon Lomax:

“There are no particular surprises. We fully expected Kensa heat pumps to perform well and the EST data has confirmed our sites delivered the highest average system efficiency amongst all participating manufacturers, with all Kensa sites appearing in the top 18% of the measured sample. This is testament to not only our industry-leading product design, but also our application principles, our focus on delivering products suited to UK properties and the comprehensive technical support provided to our installation partners. It is a proud achievement for Kensa. That said, the industry must acknowledge other sites performed below expectation and we support the EST’s quest to learn lessons from those installations during the planned second phase of the trial”

Reaction to the trial results has been mixed with some commentators suggesting that heat pumps have failed to demonstrate their credentials as a renewable technology.

Lomax comments:
“It is far too early to draw any firm conclusions. The EST has acknowledged that further evaluation is required to understand some of the initial findings. Certainly comparing performance of air and ground source heat pump technologies on this basis would be premature, given the significant amount of estimated data for air source heat pumps included in the report”.

In a rallying call to the wider heat pump industry, Richard Freeborn, Kensa’s founder and Chairman demanded that immediate action is taken, not just to ensure the 83 trial sites are performing at their optimum levels, but to provide reassurance that all future heat pump customers will benefit from the report’s findings.

‘Whilst the report reflected the performance of heat pumps installed prior to the launch of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, it is clear that there are still issues that need swift resolution to maintain market confidence. The governance of the MCS scheme, and its ability to protect consumers, must be refined to ensure sanctions are imposed on suppliers and installers not capable of delivering projects consistent with the trial’s best performing sites. Further, Kensa fully endorses the EST’s finding that simpler controls offer superior performance which fully reflects Kensa’s long-held position. Finally, we would urge the EST and other parties, to consider outlawing the discredited use of back-up immersion heaters in heat pumps designed for UK homes.’

Having been established in 1999, Kensa has unrivalled experience gained during the installation of over 2000 systems which culminated in the award of the 2009 Corgi Live Green Manufacturer of the Year accolade.

According to Lomax:

“An important element of our mission is to educate the market so that all heat pumps deliver the higher system efficiencies demonstrated by some of the trial’s site. We are delighted that Simon Green, the EST’s Project Director has accepted our invitation to visit Kensa’s manufacturing plant so we can share our expertise . Ensuring that all parties understand how we have achieved these results is vital for the future of the industry.”
