Electric Vehicle Adoption in UK Universities Surges Ahead of National Average

The higher education sector in the UK is well known for being forward thinking and embracing new technologies. This is especially true when it comes to the green and environmental sector; as it’s an area that academics contribute to heavily both in practical and theoretical terms.

Recent research conducted by IntelligentCarLeasing.com has revealed the level of electric vehicles across all of the universities in the UK. The published results paint an interesting picture of the institutions that have the highest and lowest % of their fleets made up of electric powered vehicles.

The top 11 institutions in terms of highest % electric vehicles in fleet are:

1. Bucks New University - 66%
2. Edge Hill University - 50%
3. The University of East London - 45.50%
4. The University of Bedfordshire - 33%
4. Royal Holloway, University of London - 33%
6. The University of Sunderland 27.78%
7. The University of Kent - 26%
8. The University of Dundee - 25%
8. The University of Greenwich - 25%
8. Leeds Trinity University - 25%
8. Queen Mary, University of London - 25%

With electric powered vehicles looking set to become a cleaner driving option in line with an increase in renewable electricity production universities are well ahead of the curve. The average percentage of electric only vehicles in university fleets currently stands at 7.73% according to this study; whereas the national average is only 0.11%. This is a huge difference of 7073% higher than the public ownership rate of EVs from all registered cars in 2013.
