Braich Ddu Wind Farm, Wales
Completion Date: Commissioned August 2007
1. Identify and manage environmental and technical constraints in the evolution of the site layout.
2. Submit planning application and Environmental Statement (ES) for wind farm proposal.
Implementation: The environmental assessment process was completed in six months. The planning application was submitted to Gwynedd Council in early 2005. The project obtained planning permission and is currently the only wind farm in Gwynedd.
Site Specific Issues: The site was approved at committee level after a delay of approximately two years. The delay in the approval was due to the consideration of further information submitted post application. The site was located close to scheduled ancient monuments both on site and nearby. Habitats of Upland Waders and Black Grouse also had to be considered.
Conclusions: The delay is a familiar experience within wind farm development. The local authority required the submission of further information beyond the assessment results of the EIA. Consent was granted for three 1.5MW wind turbines. Construction was completed during summer 2007 and final commissioning took place at the end of autumn 2007. The site is now owned and operated by Cornwall Light and Power.
