Technical innovation key for CPV industry progress

With the development of high quality manufacturing and automation processes, the concentrated photovoltaic industry can continue commercializing.

Industry commentators have debated whether a drive towards streamlined automation and manufacturing processes compromises the key characteristic of the CPV industry to date, that of innovation and bespoke design.

Last month PV Insider spoke to Markus Gruber, Sales Director for Solar Technology and New Business at Grenzebach Maschinenbau about this issue. Gruber explained that “At Grenzebach we differentiate between hard automation and flexible automation.”

“As hard automation we would describe bespoke designed solutions which are capable of producing one product only. The advantage of such an approach is that the yield of such systems can be extremely high.”

“Flexible automation would be a system that is able to produce more than one product with the same production equipment. The changes necessary are minimal and in most cases only require a new program.”

With the emphasis now on companies to consider their commercialization strategy, module design is more important than ever. Technical innovation is critical and at CPV USA 2013 (23-24 September, San Jose) this subject will be up for discussion. Grenzebach Maschinenbau will be joined by a number of CPV experts to understand the viability of the industry.
