Etrion announces PPA in Chile and participation at PV insider LATAM

Last week, Swiss PV developer Etrion announced that a PPA had been signed with Aguas Blancas a mine in northern Chile for 8.8MW of power. With Etrion looking to international financial institutions for funding, financing from commercial banks is yet to appear for PV in Chile.

The park which is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2014 is expected to require US$25 Million of funding, a portion of which is expected to be covered through non-recourse debt from international financial institutions. Etrion will also carry a certain amount of equity financing privately.

With international financial institutions such as the Inter-American Development bank and the International Financing Corporation continuing to fund plants in Chile, it is unknown when commercial banks will also become involved in this. Just this week, the Inter-American Development Bank confirmed it is funding the Pozo Almonte Plants under development by Solar Pack which will have a total capacity of 25.4 megawatts and are expected to begin producing power in October.

Just this week Etrion and First Solar confirmed their participation at PV Insider LATAM (10-11 September, Santiago, Chile) and will be part of a panel specifically addressing some of the key construction challenges such as developing a viable supply chain to rural areas in Chile.

They will be joined by every developer in Chile that has a plant in an advanced stage of development. Thus the line-up of developers and EPCs sharing their technical and bureaucratic expertise now includes First Solar, Etrion, Soitec, Ingenostrum, Solar Pack, Sky Solar, Kaltemp, Selray Energías, who will be outlining the best strategies on plant design, inverter choice and module selection.

No other event in Chile brings together mining companies, such as Minera Collahuasi, Codelco and Quiborax, with the key stakeholders in order to create and build the business relationships and share the key technical knowledge needed to get plants PPAs and financing.
