Awareness increasing for concentrated photovoltaics in the Middle East
The Middle Eastern markets have long been touted as potential CPV hotspots, and genuine excitement about the opportunity has emerged in light of recent announcements – not least of all in Saudi Arabia.
In a recent PV Insider article, Gaetan Borgers, executive vice president of Soitec's solar division, noted that "CPV technology is perfectly suited for countries that benefit from year-long high solar irradiation, such as Saudi Arabia," which explains their recent activities in the MENA region.
"Thanks to [our] cooperation with the Medina College of Technology, we will be able to further test and demonstrate our technology's competitiveness under desert conditions while supporting its deployment," Borgers explained.
With conditions perfect for CPV to fulfil its potential, the industry is now looking to connect with the key decision makers and raise awareness of the technology.
At MENASOL a number of CPV companies will be contributing to the agenda. Alongside Soitec will be CPV players such as Abengoa Solar, Isofoton, Amonix and Sumitomo Electric. The latter, announced this week, will be presenting on their innovations of combining CPV with a Redox Flow Battery system – tackling the important issue of storage.
