The first Planet Positive™ building
Sainsbury's distribution centre, Pineham—the world's first Planet Positive™ building
Client: Sainsbury’s
Developer: ProLogis
Product: Twin-Therm® and SolarWall®
Architect: Stephen George & Partners, Solihull
Total average: Annual energy savings for this project are estimated to be 256,093kWh and 61 tonnes of carbon dioxide
SolarWall: 947m² using Corus Colorcoat Prisma® in Alaska Grey
Sustainability credentials: Planet Positive™ (complete building)
ProLogis was adamant that the Sainsbury's distribution centre at Pineham should be the first Planet Positive™ building in the world. The initiative undertakes to offset all of the carbon dioxide expended during the construction of the building – and then to offset a further 10%, delivering a net environmental legacy.
The inclusion of SolarWall®, a perforated transpired solar collector, means that the building will make a significant contribution to its own running costs throughout its service life. The SolarWall® system has been independently tested, monitored, recorded and proven by BSRIA to produce annual heating cost savings of 64% and an independently thermally modelled report by Battle McCarthy proved SolarWall® can provide up to 20% of a building’s total energy requirements.
SolarWall® was provided as CarbonNeutral as part of the Corus Confidex Sustain® Guarantee, which ensures that all of the unavoidable carbon emissions created throughout the entire life of the SolarWall® system, cradle to cradle, is offset by investing in environmental projects worldwide.
